Night in paradise english explanation.Night in Paradise review. Night in Paradise

Night in Paradise :

 Title: Night in Paradise (2020)

Dir: Park Hoon-jung

Language : Korean

Starring: Uhm Tae-goo; Jeon Yeo-been; Cha Seung-won

Taking advantage of idyllic Jeju island on the backdrop, the film is framed beautifully with impressive drone shots overlooking the picturesque location. The close-up shots and shallow focus capture the silent but tormented emotions of the characters effectively. Kim Young-hoo's use of arc shots and 360-degree tracking shots add suspense and intensity to the action sequences.

Mowg handles well both emotional and action sequences with appropriate BGM that escalates the emotions of the viewers. The melancholic closing music makes that ending gritty and even more depressing.

Eom Tae-goo fleshes out his character with his muscular physique and strong facial expressions. Jeon Yeo-bin is phenomenal in her execution in the third act. A total BA with glaring but teary eyes. Cha Seung-won, though underutilized, delivers the spot-on performance needed for his avatar.

The film started well using a straightforward narrative but slows down towards the middle. The supposed to be seat-edge man-hunt turns out to be series of chatting, noodle eating, and a parade of muscular men in black suits. The story is predictable and full of cliches of most gangster films. Though the film loses its momentum because of the drama sandwiched between the thrilling opening and the exhilarating climax, the performances and the dialogues of the two main characters pull it off. The movie then picks up its pace towards the enticing climax until it concludes with a heart-wrenching finale.

Character development is lacking. Though backstories are presented, they're not given much depth unlike Park Hoon-Jung's multilayered characters in his previous works. The story invests much in Park Tae-goo’s character only to shift the spotlight on Kim Jae-yeon’s underdeveloped character at the climax.

Though the end is a hit-and-miss and the movie doesn't offer anything new, still it is entertaining to watch. Park Hoon-jung wants to create a different gangster film by incorporating drama on its premise but for me, it doesn’t pull off seamlessly. But despite some flaws in the screenplay, the movie still turns out to be an enticing film to watch.
