Tumbbad movie story explained in english

Title: Tumbbad (2018)

Dir: Rahi Anil Barve & Adesh Prasad

The story is unique and interesting, aon mythological story drapes in horror. It circles in the mysterious, magical folklore that is lurking in the cursed place of Tumbbad.

Sohum Shah fleshes out Vinayak from the first time he registers on screen until his moment of demise. His eyes showing an emotional void every time he would set back to Tumbbad is one outstanding characterization.

Production Design is commendable. The isolated house, the decaying castle, the house in Pune, and the unimaginable setting in the climax are spectacular.

Pankaj Kumar's brilliant camera works and Sanyuktan Kaza's meticulous editing create stunning frames which is definitely a display of artistry and visual richness. The foggy atmosphere, smoky lighting, dark tone, and the monsoon rain are framed and edited brilliantly. Close-ups and tight frames are the icings on the cake giving out a claustrophobic vibe. The climax is visually stunning and the vast red color is literally engulfing and suffocating.

The score by Jesper Kyd is fantastic. It maintains a dark and eerie vibe throughout the film. I particularly like the song "Come, come conquer Tumbbad", it intensifies the thrill and excitement of the scene.

The best aspect of the film is the Narrative Style. It is divided into 3 chapters, each of different timelines which includes some significant historical events in India. It maximizes the use of visual storytelling with the overarching theme of human greed. It emphasizes the terror of human nature that is presented in a diabolical metaphor. The whole movie is presented in a manner that seeks to surprise than scare.

The movie 6 years in the making is the debut work of Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad. Nevertheless, it didn't show any sign of amateurism. A form of surreal illusion uses extreme suspense and overpowering anticipation scaring the hell out of everyone with the most horrifying element - the fear of the unknown.

I never imagined an arthouse film could be this visually stunning yet horrifying. This horror movie with cinematic artistry and elegance done patiently and subtly would surely stay with the audience long.
